Mental Leap 2: Noticing Patterns
Around 8 weeks, your baby may stare at a face, shape or toy for longer and notice familiar sounds.

From our home
The Wonder Weeks calls this patterns. A pattern is something familiar or repeated, such as your face, stripes on a blanket, or the same song. Your baby may now spend longer looking and listening.
What to expect
- Looking at your face or a toy for a few seconds.
- Watching you as you move nearby.
- Smiling or making a sound when you talk.
What can help
- Get face-to-face during a nappy change.
- Copy baby's sounds and wait for an answer.
- Short, watched tummy time on your chest still counts.
