Movement · Often 5–7 months
Rolling from back to tummy
Back-to-tummy often follows tummy-to-back. It usually needs more strength and body control.

From our home
Between about 5 and 7 months, many babies learn to roll in both directions. Some learn the directions in a different order.
What it may look like
- Turning the head and reaching across the body.
- Lifting the hips and twisting onto the tummy.
- Rolling easily in both directions.
How to help
- Give supervised floor time on the tummy, back and both sides.
- Put a toy just to one side and let baby work out the turn.
- Do not pull baby's arm or force the roll.
