First steps: 9–15 months

First steps can happen between about 9 and 15 months. Around the first birthday is common.

A first step may be one shaky step before sitting down. Some babies start earlier and others need more time.

What you may notice

Standing alone for a moment.
Taking one or two shaky steps.

Keep it simple

Give safe space to practise barefoot indoors.
Let balance grow without rushing.
